Biographies

Today students finalized who they are writing his/her Biography on.  We signed out the Chromebooks and students began to research the person they chose.  They need to submit a "Writing a Biography" (planner) before their actual biographical writing can take place.  Please AYC (ask your child) how they did on this step of the writing process .  Today was for making point form notes and on Friday students will start writing their biographies. The biography is to be (approximately) 500 words (which, in size 12 point font and double spaced, takes up two pages).

Anti-Bullying Week

For the next two weeks we are talking about Bullying, the difference between bullying and conflict, and what you can do to stop bullying. Students were asked to find an age-appropriate video and add it below as a comment.  I will choose some to share with the class over the course of the next two weeks.

November News

We are learning about Order of Operations, specifically using B.E.D.M.A.S. to answer math equations that contain  multiple functions within one question.  If you are a little rusty, here is a video to explain what we went over (again) in class today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAgfnK528RA Students are coming home with a math sheet (marked).  Please AYC (ask your child) to see their work, and maybe have them show you the way to do it (or practice if they need to). *SEVERAL students worked WITH me to complete the sheet, so perhaps get them to show you a question on their own. If students did not show their work, it was hard to correct them on their mistakes.  Please encourage them to show or explain how they arrived at the right OR wrong answer. Happy Learning! :)

Welcome October!

We have worked through our "First 20 Days" math strand.  We touched on a variety of subject areas in the math curriculum, but our main focus was how to be successful in math by having a GROWTH MINDSET.  We learned how to work together with our peers to solve challenging math problems, how to organize our ideas, how to make a plan (of attack), and provide RICH answers that explain our thinking and rationalize our solutions.  Our second math strand, which began on Thursday, October 4th, is Number Sense and Numeration.  We did a variety of PLACE VALUE activities, through "guided math" (where a small group works with a teacher), as a whole class, and in small groups.  We worked with BASE TEN BLOCKS and students modeled their thinking using these math manipulatives. Our Math classes are every morning for the first 100 minute block.  The last 45 minutes approximately of this block will be spent doing our established MATH CENTRES (these include paper and penci...

Welcome Students and Families

Welcome to your Grade 6 Year! We have had a busy start and look forward to the dust settling so that we can get into our regular routine.  I will be sending home an info package mid next week that outlines a few things.  With paper conservation in mind, I will utilize this blog when there is info that needs to be shared that is too large for Remind App.  I will have your child make notes in the Agenda when there is a new/important post on this forum. I HIGHLY encourage you to sign up for Remind.  More and more teachers are using it as an easy way of communicating with parents (and older students).  It's as simple as texting.  It just requires you to go to this site to join ... https://www.remind.com/join/maglar Thank you for your time so far and I look forward to connecting with you soon! -SM
